报告人简介:
Karin Block is an Associate Professor at the City College of New York (CUNY) and Adjunct Associate Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. She is interested in the evolution of minerals in geobiological, geothermal and magmatic systems. Currently her main focus of research is on the interaction between microbes and clay minerals to better understand carbon and nitrogen cycling in soils, and the aggregation dynamics of clays and microbes in aquatic environments. She is an expert on the crystallization history of the Palisades Sill of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), Earth’s largest igneous province resulting from the breakup of Pangea and the formation of the Atlantic Ocean. SheKarin is a member of the Steering Committee for SedHeat, a research coordination network sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation to address the science, and engineering, and educational challenges of generating sustainable geothermal energy from sedimentary basins. Karin is a Sloan Scholar (2000-2006), earned an A.B. in literature, science and arts from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in earth and environmental sciences from the City University of New York.
